Adopt a Small Dog

After much thought and debate, I finally decided to get a small dog for my family. My children were ecstatic at the mere thought of getting a small dog to play with and care for and I began to concentrate on preparing for and finding a small dog with the personality that would fit my family’s needs. Instead of searching at the local pet stores, I decided adopting a small dog would be a great way to go. Many small dogs and puppies are available for adoption from animal shelters, private owners and various other places. Adopting a small dog is a great alternative to buying an animal from a pet store because you have the chance to save an animal that could possibly be put down.

For anyone looking to adopt a small dog, your local animal shelter is probably the best place to start looking for small dogs available for adoption. You might have multiple shelters in your area, so it’s not a bad idea to check all of them if they aren’t too far apart and see what kinds of dogs they have up for adoption. Lots of animal shelters are usually willing to tell you over the phone what small dogs they have to adopt or have photos posted to their website if they have one and this can save you time. Also, search in your neighborhood for flyers advertising the private sale or adoption of a small dog and check your local classifieds and bulletin boards. These are great resources to find small dogs for adoption if you are unable to afford the fees at the other places, as there are usually a number of ads for free puppies to good homes. Caution must be taken, however, to make sure that the puppies did indeed come from a good home and are not suffering from any major health problems. Online classified ads are also a nice alternative to the paper and follow the same format. If you are having a difficult time finding a small dog for sale or adoption, consider placing an ad of your own somewhere.

I happened to find the perfect small dog for my family at one of the local shelters and we fell in love with her. There was of course an adoption fee to cover the basic medical care that she received. This is standard for most dogs adopted from shelters and usually includes spaying or neutering. Then came the really fun part; dressing and accessorizing our small dog. Dressing a small dog, especially in the winter, is more than merely seeing them strut around in adorable outfits. It is practical too. In harsh winter climates, it is important to keep your latest addition to your family warm. This means investing in small dog coats, sweaters, jackets and dresses. Online stores, such as swankpets.com, have a plethora of options that can fit your small dog’s personality, from rhinestone collars to sweatshirts and dresses. Along with clothing for your small dog, things such as beds, harnesses, bowls and grooming tools are essential for your adopted small dog to live a comfortable and happy life with its new family.
