What is Branding?

There are a lot of popular catch phrases and key terms in the wide world of internet marketing. From SEO or search engine optimization to viral videos and well beyond, the field retains a slew of phrases that may seem straightforward on the surface, but can actually entail a lot more detail and depth than they initially let off. An important phrase in internet marketing, branding doesn’t quite equate with the process of stamping an initial into a steer on the cattle ranch; in fact, while branding can involve the proliferating of a given name or symbol, web designers and other creative professionals typically interact with branding at the planning and creation stages. While getting a brand the exposure and relevance it needs to gain momentum either online or in print is a large part of any branding effort, the initial design of a brand and its visual elements is process without which no branding campaign could succeed.

The design of a brand’s creative presentation is similar to the creation of a number of personalized elements; web design experts will be familiar with the effort involved in finding just the right way to represent a client in the creation of a web site, page, or blog. This effort extends to the realm of branding, which needs to take on a sense of the character of an individual, product, or company in order to make successful impressions on viewers. Often times, the client will have a certain outstanding character trait or business direction that makes it easy to fashion a visual piece or suite of pieces, such as a particular color or type of line work used in existing letterhead or packaging, but sometimes branding ideas must be created entirely from scratch.

The visual elements of a branding campaign will typically extend to a set involving a logo and typeset, with a possible logotype as well, and various items such as stationery, special characters or concepts, and symbols. While some companies are eager to retain a branding set with as many elements as possible, sometimes a greater impact can be made with the use of a single or only a few pieces. Once the visual components of a brand have been created, an effort to expose the brand to the public can be made. The goal in most cases is to not only attract and retain customers, but to serve impressions of the brand to viewers so that the form an association.

As an example, a specialty meat production firm in Austin Texas might inspire the creation of a grill-pattern logo and elegant logotype; after the completion of these visual elements, the branding process would typically assess high-potential areas in which to place the branding elements, such as at Austin Tx forums, restaurant and cooking sites and forums, and so on. A successful branding campaign relies on intelligent placement of various visual pieces that convey information about a given company, but begins with quality design.
